Prayer and Liturgy

Our Mission Statement, Learning together as we walk in the footsteps of Christ, underpins all that we do at St John Fisher Catholic Primary School. As stated in our core values, We promote personal and spiritual growth through prayer and reflection. In order to do this, we follow the Prayer and Liturgy Directory, which can be found in full below:

To Love You More Dearly

Daily Prayer

Pupils take part in a daily Celebration of the Word within their classrooms. This will either be led by the class teacher, by pupils, by our school chaplains, or by visitors (such as students from Loreto). A ‘seasons, senses, scripture, structure’ format will be used to plan and prepare these sessions, and kept in a class file. There will also be opportunities for a variety of prayer within the classroom, including Lectio Divina, Visio Divina and meditation. Traditional daily prayers will also be said, at the start of the day, before and after lunch and at the end of day. Each class will have a prayer book that goes home with every child during the school year. They will compose a prayer with their family, which will be shared in school.

Once a week, the whole school will gather for their Gospel assembly, based on the Scripture for the coming Sunday.

Our Chaplaincy Team will work with the subject coordinator to plan, prepare and deliver Celebrations of the Word in different classrooms throughout the year.

A weekly ‘Family prayer at home’ is shared with parents and staff, prepared by teachers and leaders within our Trust.  Our weekly newsletter always contains a link to the Wednesday Word.

The Liturgical Year

Mass will be celebrated at the start of the academic year, on feast days and for Year Six pupils before they leave. Parents (and sometimes parishioners) are invited to mass.

During Lent, there will be an Ash Wednesday service, Lent prayers and Stations of the Cross. There will also be an opportunity for pupils in Key Stage Two to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Years Three and Four pupils will perform an Easter production based on Scripture.

During Advent, there will be a whole school liturgy, an EYFS and Key Stage One nativity and a Key Stage Two carol concert.

Additional assemblies will take place during the year to celebrate certain events, such as Harvest, and to highlight principles of Catholic Social Teaching. You can find out more about Catholic Social Teaching here.

Pupils will learn a range of hymns per term, as well as parts of the Mass which are sung.
