Autumn Update

Welcome to the first term of your Year 6 journey at St John Fisher!

Learning this term

English:

This term, Year 6 will develop their reading and writing skills through a range of engaging texts, exploring narrative and non-fiction writing.

Unit 1 – Narrative Writing: The Night of the Gargoyles
We will begin the year by exploring Eve Bunting’s atmospheric story The Night of the Gargoyles. Children will investigate how authors create suspense, tension and atmosphere through descriptive language, precise vocabulary and effective sentence structures. They will then use these skills to write their own spooky stories for our class book, Things That Go Bump in the Night.

Unit 2 – Non-Chronological Reports: Planetarium
Our second unit will focus on informative, non-chronological report writing. Using Planetarium as our stimulus, children will learn how to organise and present factual information clearly and effectively. They will develop their use of formal language, technical vocabulary, headings, subheadings and a range of sentence structures to create engaging and informative reports.

Unit 3 – Narrative Writing: Wisp: A Story of Hope
We will finish the term by exploring Wisp: A Story of Hope. Children will consider how stories can communicate powerful themes and emotions. They will develop their ability to create believable characters, build atmosphere and structure a narrative, before writing their own stories inspired by the themes and ideas within the text.

Throughout the term, children will also continue to develop their grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Maths:

This term, Year 6 will build on their mathematical knowledge and develop their confidence in solving a wide range of problems, following the Maths No Problem scheme. We will focus on developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, while encouraging children to explain and justify their mathematical thinking.

Unit 1 – Numbers up to 10,000,000
We will begin by exploring numbers up to 10 million, developing children’s understanding of place value and how numbers can be represented, compared, ordered and rounded.

Unit 2 – Using the Four Operations
Children will develop their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including solving multi-step problems and applying their knowledge to real-life contexts. We will focus on choosing efficient methods and explaining our mathematical reasoning.

Unit 3 – Fractions
We will develop our understanding of fractions, including equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, simplifying fractions and performing calculations with fractions. Children will apply these skills to a variety of reasoning and problem-solving activities.

Unit 4 – Decimals
Our final unit will focus on decimal numbers, including understanding place value, comparing and ordering decimals, rounding and performing calculations. Children will make connections between decimals, fractions and whole numbers.

Throughout the term, children will also regularly practise SATs-style questions and past papers. This will help them become familiar with the format and language of SATs questions, while developing their ability to apply their mathematical knowledge independently and confidently.

History

This term, Year 6 will explore World War II, developing their understanding of the key events, people and decisions that shaped the course of the war. Children will learn about the causes and early stages of the conflict and consider what life was like for people living through this important period in history.

Throughout the unit, children will develop their skills in chronology, interpreting historical sources, understanding different perspectives and explaining cause, consequence and significance.

Branch 1 – Creation and Covenant
Children will explore the biblical accounts of Creation and the Covenant, considering what these stories teach us about God, humanity and our relationship with Him. They will explore the importance of covenant and how God’s promises are revealed throughout scripture.

Branch 2 – Prophecy and Promise
In this unit, children will explore the role of prophets and prophecy within the Old Testament. They will consider how the prophets communicated God’s message and how their words pointed towards the coming of Jesus. Children will explore the idea of promise and fulfilment and make connections between Old and New Testament scripture.

Things to Remember

- PE is on a Monday and Friday. Remember to wear your PE kits on this day.

- Homework goes out on a Friday and is due back the following Thursday. You get 2 house points for handing homework early or 1 house point for handing it on time.

- Spellings are tested on a Friday morning.
