Spring Term 1

Welcome to Spring Term in Year 5. So far, we have been exploring History, Geography and Art and Design through our thematic topic: The Vikings. In Maths we have been solving multi-step word problems, investigated graphs and are currently comparing and ordering fractions and mixed numbers. In English, we were writing to inform by creating our own biographies. We began that topic by reading all about Mary Anning, through her story, Stone Girl, Bone Girl by Laurence Anholt.

Currently, we are busy learning the songs for our participation in the SAPSMA choir, ready for our exciting performance at the Alban Arena on Tuesday 1st April at 7pm!

Things to Remember

  • PE is on Tuesday and Friday afternoons
  • Homework is set at the end of the day on Thursdays and should be returned by the following Wednesday

If you finish your homework early and return it the following day, you will receive 2 house points

  • Please read regularly with your child and record with a parents signature:

3 signatures a week will get 1 house point

4 or more signatures will get 2 house points

When children finish their book, remind them to take their test on the Accelerated Reader programme - login is in their Reading Record and a link for the website can be found in the Classwork section of our Google Classroom.

We now have stamps for Reading Records so the children can show off just how many words they have read - who will be our first millionaire?!

  • Spellings will be tested on Fridays - please encourage the children to practise with activities such as 'read, cover, write, check' or writing each letter in a different bright colour of the rainbow.
  • The children also have logins for TTRS (Times Table Rockstars) and the Letter-Join website for handwriting practice, in their Reading Records. Please continue to support your child's learning by encouraging them to practise both their times tables and handwriting, alongside all the lovely reading they are doing.

 Our Learning Experiences

Last half term, Year 5 presented their own class assembly to share the wonderful things they had been up to in their lessons. In Science, we explored properties of materials and the interesting effects of heating, cooling, and reversible and irreversible changes. We got messy with vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, exploding film canisters to discover the different materials that were created. In Art, the children moulded and sculpted using the clay to create intriguing Roman artefacts, which looked realistic enough to have come straight from a Time Team dig.  The children were able to prepare for the festive season with their marvellous participation in the carol concert at the Abbey. We were very proud of the effort they put into their rehearsals and then on the night, under the lights. Well done, Year 5!

This term, we have already been working hard exploring forces using the new Force Meters. We have already been on our first out-of-school adventure when we were invited to Loreto College to enjoy their performance of Beauty and the Beast.
